To me, court was merely a formality. I know it’s important, but she has been our daughter from day one, and I don’t think I could love her more just because a judge signed a paper. Is it bad to think that way?

We had a nice lunch with our family of four to celebrate. No one else was able to make the hearing, so it was just us four. My favorite part was where the judge said:
As I was watching you through this hearing, there is no doubt in my mind that this little girl belongs in your family. Congratulations, you are now a family of four.

We were standing in line at the store, the same store where this happened, and a little boy about 4 said, “He has crazy hair!”

I deflected the insult with humor. “Oh, this isn’t crazy. You should have seen it yesterday!”

I didn’t think he even understood what was happening.

But my boy, my Little B, did understand. He started rubbing his hair and looking sad. It was one of those situations where I didn’t know what to say, so I didn’t say anything at all. In hindsight, I have a million things I could have said…should have said. But I didn’t do anything to stick up for my little guy.

Once I walked away, all I could do was tell him how much I loved his hair. And everything about him. He certainly understood that.

In the future, I’m going to get out my teacher voice and proclaim, “That wasn’t very nice!” I need to start getting my responses ready, because my son deserves a mom who will stand up for him. Whether it’s an innocent comment from a four year old, or a racist comment from a grown man. He doesn’t deserve to feel inferior because of his hair or skin color.

No one does.

(Yes, we reused last year’s costume. It still fit, and it’s adorable. I only feel a little guilty about it.)

He always wants to kiss his sister.

He is always entertaining her by singing and dancing.

When I take Miss A’s picture for her monthly updates, he always jumps up on the couch to sit next to her.

I’m sure it won’t always be like this, but I am sure enjoying the sweet Big Brother.

The first post placement visit was basically a bunch of questions about Miss A’s health, how we’re all adjusting, and making sure we sent our monthly letter to the birth mother. It’s definitely easier the second time around because we knew what to expect. The final visit will be in three months.

Things are finally calming down around here. I hope to get into blogging more often now that we are settling into being a family of four. I’m not sure where this blog will go from here though. I’ll post our story soon. And of course, more pictures.
